For a little history: This heirloom quilt top was given to me by my Mom, which I then finished with quilting and binding. She had inherited the scrappy patchwork blocks in the center, from a family friend, probably over 50 years ago! Having been stored away all those years, we can say truly say these vintage blocks in the center are like new. Mom, whom was a seamstress for many years and has plenty of experience, finished piecing the center of the quilt and added the outer border fabrics. These recently added borders are all current fabrics, not necessarily vintage. Once she had the borders attached she handed it over to me for finishing!
The fabrics all have a nice, quality feel and are in excellent condition with no tears or weak spots that I could determine. I cannot say for certain whether they are all cotton, but they are like new. The borders and backing that we used to finish the quilt are quality cotton.
I have used freemotion quilting designs in different areas of the quilt. This gives the pretty texture. I especially love the flowing feather quilting in the dark green border. Freemotion means hand guided machine stitching, not computer.
You will notice in some of the photos that the backing is an ecru tone on tone cotton print, pieced with a dark green floral stripe across the one end. This happened because I didn't have enough length using just the ecru fabric. This dark green print seemed a good choice to match the rest of the quilt and add a little interest to the back.
I have washed and dried this quilt which makes the fabrics relax and soften, ready to use. Notice that some of the photos were taken after washing which creates the more crinkly, old fashioned look that we associate with homemade quilts.
For care: I washed in my front load washer, with regular laundry soap, and dried with warm heat. If your washing machine has an agitator, I would suggest using a delicate cycle. It will not shrink any further.

I always use quality fabrics and thread. In addition, I am conscientious about making sure I use a full seam allowance. I never leave fabrics holding together by a few threads. This ensures a quality, handmade item, that will withstand normal care and use for many years.
The inner batting layer is usually Pellon or Hobbs 80/20. Occasionally I use a bamboo batting.
Binding is always double thickness and attached by machine for added durability, with neat mitered corners.
The nice thing about quilts is that the more you use them the softer and more snuggly they become. Don’t be afraid to use them wherever you want to be. After all, we wear cotton fabrics everyday in our clothes… your quilt won’t fall apart before it gets well loved!
Care
Care
I have often washed my own quilts in with a regular wash load, with no regrets. However, it is still recommended to use a gentle cycle, mild soap and tumble drying on low heat. (** Note: I rarely prewash my fabrics. Expect a small amount of shrinkage on the first laundering.) It is the tumble drying that achieves the soft crinkly look that we associate with handmade quilts. If you prefer a flatter look, lay flat to air dry… do not dry in the dryer.
Remember that sunlight will fade any fabric, and your quilt is no exception. So; have a care when you leave it outside frequently or in a sunny window.
